Session I: Foundations of Herbal Healing
300 hrsAn introduction to the history and traditions of herbalism will prepare the students as they build a solid record of Material Medica that will incorporate over 100 herbs. This session offers the students an opportunity to learn the systems of the body and the herbs that tonify these systems. Through a “hands on” herbal remedies lab and with an emphasis on family health, nutrition, and lifestyle, this course will empower students to naturally take care of themselves and their families. Designed to parallel the growing season, time outdoors will constitute a major portion of the course. Thus students can expect to familiarize themselves with the art and science of wild plant identification, organic gardening, and ethical wildcrafting as they deepen their connections with the Earth and its abundance.
Session II: Advanced Herbal Science
252 hrsAnother multidimensional approach to the study of herbalism, this session will expand upon the themes covered in session 1, this time concentrating on specific health conditions, relevant herbal activities, and classroom case studies. Students will continue to expand their Material Medica as a more thorough investigation of plant constituent groups will be covered. Safe and responsible practice will be addressed as we explore herb-drug interactions and common contraindications. Profiles in Herbal Businesses will inspire future professionals. A thorough study of flower essences will be presented. This course will also introduce the art of herbal formulation through a “hands on” Herbal Remedies Lab. Healer, Heal Thyself will be the underlying theme of the course as we explore ways to nourish and connect ourselves with the plants, design our own medicine chests and first aid kits, and partake in several exercises devoted to practicing a wholesome way of health. Topics in Ethnobotany and an in depth study of the Eclectic tradition will ensure the students’ awareness of the world’s rich herbal history. With the holidays pending, this class will also enjoy using herbs festively and creatively with gift giving in mind!
